Midwifery Studies Program Philosophy
The midwifery studies program values the midwives model of care.
“The Midwives Model of Care™ is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events. The Midwives Model of Care includes:
- monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
- providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
- minimizing technological interventions and;
- identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention
The application of this model has been proven to reduce to incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section. “

In addition, we recognize that birth is not an illness and we affirm the safety and rightness of home and birthcenter birthing practices. We support informed choice, continuity of care, respect, clinical and educational excellence, cultural diversity, non-violence in the birth process.
The Midwifery Studies Program seeks to prepare midwives who will value diversity: be professionally, legally and ethically accountable and accessible to their communities: practice within F.S. 467 scope of practice, our Florida Midwifery Practice Act: and promote community education for safe childbirth alternatives, breastfeeding and conscious parenting practices.
